“The depth of darkness to which you can descend and still live is an exact measure of the height to which you can aspire to reach.”
-Unknown
“It's always darkest before the dawn.”
-Proverb
I know it, you know it, we’re all afraid of the darkness! Don’t lie. It’s inevitable. That’s what it all boils down to – the darkness and the light, and which will triumph over every man’s heart. Everyone is afraid that however good they are, no matter how much light they shine, the darkness that rests inside every man’s heart will overcome them. It hides, deep inside ourselves. You can choose to ignore it, pretend it’s not there. But it will find a way out. The darkness always finds a way out…
“I’ve thought of a present for you… shall I give you despair?”
-Sephiroth, FF VII: Advent Children
The scene begins in the white void. For those of you who are unaware, Skyler’s previous personality changes all ended up in the fusing together of all the personalities or versions into Skyler himself, and he has learned the ability to call forth, in his mind, the white void – a place where he can visit and talk to any of these past personalities. At the moment, however, Skyler is alone – the real Skyler.
"We start off playing with our children, but they end up toying with us."
-Leonid S. Sukhorukov
The first of four personalities that usually appear is a child version of Skyler, about ten years old, who is known as Little One. He is usually dressed in an oversized t-shirt and a set of black shorts. His hair is a bright blonde and his eyes a curious light blue. Funnily enough, although the other personalities are all older, when Little One speaks, everyone listens.
“Great hopes make great men.”
-Thomas Fuller
The second that normally appears is known as Index – the older, teenage Striker. He is always dressed in a grey/silver shirt that reads ‘Index Five’ on the front and has a big number 1 on the back, like a soccer shirt, with ‘Striker’ written on top. Index’s hair is still blonde, and his eyes are full of hope, also noting that this point in Skyler’s life one of his closest friends had not committed suicide yet and the group were still known as Index Five.
“How a person masters his fate is more important than what his fate is.”
-Wilhelm von Humboldt
The third version, which appeared only last year, is known as Fatebringer. This version of Skyler is vastly different to the other two, and is similar in figure to the present-day Skyler. He wears red contacts, however, and his hair is dyed white, albeit it is short and spiked. He wears a flowing white shirt and a set of jeans, and his smile is cocky, yet filled with a certain quality as if he knows he can back it up.
“Anger begins with folly, and ends with repentance.”
-H. G. Bohn
The fourth and most recent version (aside from the current version) is known as Crusader, after the Fury Crusader period of Skyler’s life. He is dressed in a complete maroon outfit, his hair is longer yet still white and his eyes are red with fire. His pants have two tears on them, one on the front of each leg, and they reveal two deep scars which are never likely to heal. One is from Danny Vice, one is from Jack of Blades, both vicious matches.
“Unity, to be real, must stand the severest strain without breaking.”
-Mahatma Gandhi
However, none of these personalities are here right now. Skyler is alone in the void. Skyler seems to have blended the best aspects of his past lives into his current self. Skyler still wears Crusader’s torn maroon pants to remind him of his past, although there is a new scar along his left arm gained from a particularly painful match with Creeping Death. Skyler wears Fatebringer’s white unbuttoned shirt and also has ‘Fate’ tattooed along his right shoulder. From Index, Skyler has taken the shirt. For while no-one realises it, Skyler always wears underneath anything else he wears backstage the very same Index Five shirt that he has had for over eight years. And finally, from Skyler’s youngest version, Little One, Skyler has taken the trademark blue eyes that seem so innocent and childlike. But just for simplicity, the Skyler who really is Skyler, as connected with his Ace of Hearts nickname, is referred to in the void as Ace.
And so finally, with all that annoying background out of the way, Ace summons up his past versions. Well, he tries. But the only one that appears is Little One. Ace waits for a second, but when neither of the other three show, Ace looks down at Little One, who looks up at him, the four blue eyes shared between the two of them connecting in ways you can’t imagine. Little One looks behind Ace for a second and then glances back at him, as if asking him to turn around. Ace does so, and turns on his heels – and is shocked.
The white void is turning black. It is impossible to tell where it originates, as it is spreading rapidly. Almost all of Ace’s view is obscured with the black, and it overtakes him, spreading so quickly that when he turns around to Little One again, the white void is no longer the white void. It is the black void. Ace can only see Little One through a strange glow that Little One is illuminating. Little One then grabs Ace’s attention briefly.
Little One: Listen.
And from nowhere, a voice spreads through the blackness, it seethes with evil, with malice and hatred in its tone.
[/i]??: My victims are rich or poor, young or old, strong or weak. I cause millions of accidents, I am cancer in your bones. I fathered the lie, twist what you say. Speak not the truth. I am insidious, impartial, deep inside your chromosomes. I take what you love and leave you in tears. I imprison your soul, your hopes are my games, I strip you of pride, my promise is in vain. While you burn at the stake, I dance with the flames. I bring poverty, sickness and death. A worthless handshake, the slickest thief, I steal your wealth. I answer your prayers for greed and lust. More than evil… I laugh at your trust. I am more powerful than all the armies of the world, more violent than violence, more deadly than death, I have destroyed more men than all of nature’s wars, I am relentless, unpredictable, waiting for your last breath![/color]
And Ace looks at the source of the voice… Little One. One more habit of Little One is that he only speaks in song lyrics. Usually always they are appropriate and relevant to the situation. And this time the words come from ‘Prince of Darkness’ by Megadeth. Little One’s eyes fade from a pure black to his usual blue, and he shakes himself off, as if ridding himself of this evil. Little One turns back to Ace and says something else, this time in his normal voice.
Little One: Someone save me, if you will…
And then Little One disappears. Ace is left alone in the blackness, the darkness all around him.
“Darkness is only driven out with light, not more darkness.”
