Michael woke up not too long after 10 and was feeling better than he had in seemingly forever. He felt pretty damn good before, but that was nothing compared to how getting away from Stacy felt afterwards. He was free at last, free at last, thank God almighty, free at last. The whole world felt better. Food tasted better, the air was cleaner, it seemed like a veil had been lifted over his eyes and now he could truly see all that the world had to offer—the world that didn’t involve Stacy.
That wasn’t the only thing that had him feeling good. His life as a wrestler was also looking up. After losing the World Title to T-Money, things were not looking up for him. Maybe his personal life was distracting him from his professional life and his new liberation fully brought him back to wrestling. Maybe he hadn’t really lost a step to begin with and only thought he had. He didn’t really care about that, because in the end it wasn’t how he got there that mattered, it was the bottom line that counted. And that bottom line was that he was the first ever Tapout Champion. It was certainly a step below the World Title, but that would come again in time. For now he was champion again and that’s all that mattered to him.
Robert woke up a little earlier than Michael. He had a hangover, but besides that he felt pretty damn good. His whole life had just been turned upside down, and was slightly similar to the way Michael’s had. He had rid himself of the woman he hated (or at least thought he had, which was also true for Michael) and was prepared to begin his life over.
But that’s where it ended. Michael may have also had the problem of children to deal with, but he wasn’t planning on killing them like Robert planned on eventually doing. Michael’s idea of getting away from his woman was to simply cut off contact with her, Robert’s plan (which he thought was successful by this point) was to end her life.
And as Robert thought to himself in a motel bed, that’s exactly what he thought he had done. Alcohol mixed with a man who had mental problems was enough to make believe that his wife Ann was really behind the wheel of that car and not Stacy.
He knew he would have the finish the job eventually, because those bratty kids of his would eventually tell them that they’re father, the one who was a crazy failure, was the one responsible for their mother’s not so accidental death. They would have to be shut up forever, and soon. And you know, Robert had no problem with that. In fact, he thought it would be so great to see those hateful eyes glazed over. As that thought entered his head, he was ready to drive over right now and do it. But he convinced himself to wait. After all, there was no way he could kill somebody without having a great dinner first. He may have been a crazy man with anger problems, but he enjoyed a good meal as much as anybody.
He watched TV for a couple hours before he decided to call Michael up to see if he would go out drinking with him later on that night. He decided then he wouldn’t tell him what he had done to his wife. That was information that no one could ever know…
Michael had just finished a small lunch and was watching the local news when Robert called him. At the time, the weather was on. He couldn’t care less whether or not it would rain next week, so Michael was pretty well spaced out when the phone rang, jumping him back to reality.
“Hey, Michael,” Robert said.
“Hey. Great time last night, huh?”
“Oh it got even better after we parted ways.”
Robert already knew he said too much. Great job, he thought, you’ve failed again.
“What happened?”
I’m pretty sure I killed her was Robert almost said before biting his lip. He blurted out the only other thing he could think of.
“Oh, nothing really. Let’s just say I won’t be dealing with her anymore.”
“That’s good to hear.”
After Michael said that, Robert finally stopped being tense. Those few seconds before that response were probably up there with the worst in his life, even worse than any firing. At least when he was fired, there was hope of a new beginning, but if Michael ever found out what he had done, what option would he have except going to jail? He figured he’d have to kill him.
And Robert hoped to God he wouldn’t have to do that.
The rest of the conversation went normal enough. Robert invited Michael to go drinking with him, but Michael said he had some wrestling stuff to prepare for, but he’d love to do it some other time. They exchanged goodbyes and that was it.
During the conversation, Michael had moved to the patio, where he sat down. If he had stayed in the living room, he would have heard this on the news.
“Pregnant woman Stacy Miller has slipped into a coma. She rammed into a parked car that has caused her severe injuries. It is unclear whether or not her or the baby will survive. Based on eyewitness accounts, it is believed she was swerving out of the way of a drunk driver. If you have any information on who this person may be, please call the police. In sports…”
