OOC- This is my first attempt at a story, so bear with me if it isn't perfect. I had to rush the end, due to college starting. If i get good feedback, i'll continue with it. To make it flow a little better, here is who each color corresponds to...
Pete Carroll (USC Head Coach)
Nick Sabin (LSU Head Coach)
ChrisLeak (Current Florida QB)
Zak Warner (Me)
Paul Pasqualoni (Former SU coach)
DeAngelo Williams (Yes, DeAngelo of EPW has let me use his guy for my story)
Randon People
Kid- (Random kid in resturant)
The camera fades onto a football field. It is the 2003 Army All-American Bowl. While this game featured such future stars as Reggie Bush, Chris Leak, Brady Quinn, and Vernon Davis, most eyes were on the young FS out of Henninger High School in Syracuse, NY. The young mans name was Zak Warner, and he was making a name for himself with his big hits and playmaking abilities.
In the stands, many college coaches are talking amongst themselves.
Wow, Have you guys seen this Warner kid play? He has everything to make it at the college level, and NFL.
Yeah, true, but his attitude problem worries me. I know you have heard the stories about him hurting teammates during practice.
As this conversation is going on, a loud crack is heard on the field. It is only warm-ups, and already there are medics on the field. The third string quarterback for the East team, Clayton Richard, is lying on the ground, motionless. Warner is standing over him, showing no emotion or remorse. His teammates start getting in his face, confronting him about what he had done.
Man, what the hell you doin out there? You need to save that shit for the game. Hit the other team like that. You don't need to be taking our players out before the game.
Man, you need to just step back, get out of my face. I practice like I play; I give 110% no matter what. If you can't respect that, then why don't you just do something about it?
As the team scuffles, the coaches in the stands start muttering amongst themselves.
I see what you mean. I still think it is worth taking the risk, I don't know about you.
You guys have nothing to worry about, he is going to be signing with SU once this game is over, so don't worry yourself over it.
As the game progresses, you can't help but notice how Warner seems to distance himself from the rest of the team. After the West team scores on a long pass to Reggie Bush, Warner throws his helmet off, and almost hits a teammate.
Hey man, you better watch where you throw that shit, you damn near took my head off with it. I'm too damn good lookin and too damn skilled to be having some crazy ass white boy tryin to end my career before it even starts.
What career? You haven't don’t shit this game. At least I make a difference when I play. At least people recognize me, and I get offers from good D-1 schools. Where did you get accepted to? Memphis? Big fuckin deal. C-USA, nothing to be bragging about.
You right, you do get noticed. Everyone saw you when Reggie just lit yo ass up on that post route.
At this point, Warner gets in Williams face, and a huge argument ensues. Teammates need to pry the two men away from each other. As Warner walks away, you see a sadistic smile on his face.
On the kickoff, Williams fields it cleanly and takes off down the field. He gets to the 20 yard line, and is nailed with a vicious hit. He flips through the air, and lands hard. Zak makes his way over to DeAngelo, and helps him up.
Damn man, I guess I should have blocked that guy. My bad, hope that doesn't "ruin you career".
Man, you did that shit on purpose. You just jealous that people like me more than you, that i'm more "electrifying" then you. I'm nothin but Greatness, you ain't shit. You ain't even fit enough to be my disciple.
The rest of the game finishes without anymore problems. Warner finishes the game with 7 tackles, one interception, and a forced fumble. After the game, players start to announce where they are going to college, and finally it is Warner’s turn to speak.
I know that there has been a lot of speculation about what I’m doing once I get out of high school. I’ve heard that I have committed to USC, SU, even some lesser schools such as UAB or Memphis. Well, it’s time that the truth be known.
Every coach in the building has their eyes on Warner. He is considered the top defensive player in the country, and has been the most sought after player, even with his entire attitude problem.
I have decided, that I won’t be attending college at all. I realized, that all the rules, and structure of school just isn’t for me anymore.
The entire arena goes silent. You can tell that not a single person expected this to happen.
I have decided, that it is in my best interests to follow my heart. I have received an offer from K-1, and I plan on becoming a Mixed Martial Artist. I have been training for years, and I feel that it is what I was meant to do.
Warner then heads into the locker room, where once again, he is confronted by trouble.
Haha man, I knew you would do some dumbass shit like that. You are passing up on one of the best opportunities a punk ass like you will ever have.
Like I said, I’m doing what I need to do to get through life. I don’t feel that football is a challenge anymore. At least in MMA, I can hurt people and get away with it. Here, I get yelled at for hitting someone too hard.
Man, I was lookin forward to playing against you, so I could show you what true talent is like. Don’t think I forgot about that shit you pulled out on the field. Just be glad that I’m not one of those guys hell bent on revenge.
Don’t worry, I can almost guarantee that we will cross paths again. It might not be on the football field, but it’ll happen, and when it does, I sure hope to GOD that you are prepared, because you will get what is coming to you. That’s not a threat either, that is a promise.
With that, he exits the locker room. He walks out into the parking lot, and hops in his car. As he drives away, he calls his longtime friend Dylan, and asks him if he wants to meet up for dinner. They agree on a place, and Warner heads over.
When he gets there, he finds the restaurant packed, and he is instantly swarmed by fans, admirers, and the media. He makes his way to a table in the back, and instantly is swamped with questions.
”Why choose MMA over football?”
”What are you thinking, giving up football for that pointless shit?”
“How could you pass up all that money?”
Warner can’t help but smile. He knows inside that he made the right choice. He just ignores the massive crowd, and orders his meal. Eventually, the crowd disperses, and he can enjoy his food. At one point, he is approached by a kid who can’t be much older than 10.
Hey mister, can I get your autograph?
Um, sure, why not. Why do you want an autograph from me? Do you even know who I am?
Not really, but you had all those people around you, so you gotta be someone special. What are you, an actor, singer, something like that?
Warner can’t help but laugh at that. He hadn’t done anything worthy of recognition, and yet he still had a kid wanting his autograph. He remembers being a kid, seeing someone famous, and asking them for their autograph. There was no better feeling as a kid, then getting to meet someone that you wanted to be just like. Even seeing someone who he wasn’t sure was famous. It never hurt to ask, because you never know who could be a star one day.
I’m a football play…….I mean, a fighter.
He had to get used to not calling himself a football player anymore. It was going to be a hard change, since that had been his life for almost 10 years.
Hey kid, hold on to this, it’s going to be worth money someday. I promise you that.
As the kid leaves, the look on his face is priceless. You can tell that he will remember this day forever. As he finishes his meal, his cell phone rings. He picks it up, and listens to the voice on the other end. All of a sudden, a panicked look rushes over his face….
